Our history, our staff and our high standards of food

Capels fish and chip restaurant is located in a Victorian structure built in 1899. The first owner was Lord Clinton of Clinton Devon Estates. It is known to have been a “fish cafe” since 1949 — possibly before — and was purchased by Emma Amelia Capel in 1956 for £4,000.

Today, Capels is the only fish and chip shop in Exmouth with its own restaurant and currently employs several full and part-time staff who work hard to produce high-quality food.

Capels awards and recognitions include:

the Seafish Fryers Quality Award
the East Devon District Council Seal of Excellence, and
a Certificate of Appreciation from Exmouth Town Management for its contribution to the town.

Capels only use the freshest fish from sustainable resources. We are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.

Capels has also received and a 5-star Food Hygiene rating from the UK Food Standards Agency.

Our mission statement

At Capels Fish Bar we remain totally committed to environmental concerns here on planet Earth. Our concerns and commitment extends to the deep waters and life that is sustained there.

It is always our intention to purchase the finest fish from world-renowned, recognised and respeced fish merchants whom we ask to prove that the fish they supply is from well-managed sustainable fishing grounds. We ask for traceability of our wild, caught, mature fish from net to plate.

Maris Piper potatoes are prepared daily. We cut a thicker chip to lower the oil absorption. To this end, we only fry in vegetable oil which is non-hydrogenated and low in trans-fat. The waste is collected and converted into bio-fuel.

All other produce and products are bought locally to minimise “food miles”.

Our machinery is new, state of the art, and more efficient.

We continually strive to lower our carbon footprint through technology investment and the adoption of best-practice procedures. Our packaging is environmentally-responsible and recyclable or bio-degradable where possible.

Capels Fish Bar offers the very best in traditional fish and chips. From the sea and land to the plate, it is always delicious, nutritious and completely natural.
